A cooler room does not have to mean a higher electricity bill. If energy efficiency is a priority, the ISEER rating is one number worth checking before buying an AC. But what counts as a good ISEER rating, and which ACs offer the highest energy efficiency? Let’s find out.
In this article, we’ll break down ISEER and what it means for everyday AC performance and energy use.
ISEER stands for Indian Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It measures an AC's seasonal cooling efficiency by considering the cooling it provides against the electricity it consumes across specified operating conditions.
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) uses ISEER as the energy-efficiency parameter for room air conditioners under its star-labelling programme. The rating applies to both fixed-speed and inverter ACs.
ISEER looks at an AC's performance across a range of outdoor temperatures rather than at just one operating condition. This makes it useful for comparing seasonal efficiency between AC models.
A higher ISEER means the AC provides more cooling for the electricity consumed under the standardised conditions used for the rating.
ISEER is calculated using the AC's Cooling Seasonal Total Load (CSTL) and Cooling Seasonal Energy Consumption (CSEC) under the applicable testing methodology.
BEE's testing framework considers outdoor temperature conditions and a standardised annual cooling operation period. The applicable testing methodology is based on IS 1391 Part 2.
The rating therefore represents seasonal efficiency rather than the electricity consumption of an AC during one specific hour of operation.
A higher ISEER indicates better seasonal energy efficiency. When two comparable ACs provide similar cooling, the model with the higher ISEER is designed to deliver that cooling with greater efficiency under the rating conditions.
ISEER is therefore a useful specification when comparing ACs, particularly for households that use air conditioning regularly.
The highest ISEER should be identified by comparing the published rating of specific current models, rather than comparing brands as a whole. Different models from the same brand can have different ISEER values.
Based on the current specifications reviewed for 2026 models, Optimist lists an ISEER rating of 6.05 for its 1.4-ton 5 Star+ inverter split ACs. Optimist describes 6.05 as its highest ISEER rating and India's highest ISEER rating.
For context, current 2026 models from other manufacturers reviewed include Panasonic's 1.5-ton 5-star model with an ISEER of 5.80 and Blue Star's 1.5-ton 5-star models with ISEER ratings of 5.70 and 5.63, depending on the model.

The figures above are model-specific, so they should not be treated as ratings for an entire brand. BEE labels and manufacturer specifications can also change with the applicable rating period and model year.
How to read the comparison: A higher ISEER indicates greater seasonal energy efficiency under the applicable testing conditions. However, annual energy consumption and other model specifications should also be checked before making a purchase.
ISEER and the BEE star rating are closely related, but they are not the same thing.

BEE's star-rating system for room ACs is based on ISEER. For the 2026-27 rating framework, LG's current buying guide lists the 5-star ISEER range as 5.60 and above.
This means two ACs can both carry a 5-star rating while having different ISEER values. For example, a model with an ISEER of 6.05 and another with an ISEER of 5.80 can both fall within the 5-star category, while the 6.05 model has the higher numerical ISEER.
ISEER is particularly useful for comparing energy efficiency, but it should not be viewed in isolation.
The BEE label provides an annual electricity-consumption figure based on standardised conditions. Comparing this figure alongside ISEER can provide a clearer picture of the energy implications of different models.
ISEER tells you about efficiency, while cooling capacity tells you how much cooling the AC can provide. The two specifications measure different things and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Inverter compressors can vary their operating speed according to cooling demand. This can support efficient operation by allowing the AC to adjust its output instead of operating continuously at a fixed capacity.
An AC's efficiency rating does not by itself tell you how it will perform at very high outdoor temperatures. Check the model's specified operating range and high-ambient performance when this is an important requirement.
Some inverter ACs can temporarily increase their cooling output when demand is high. Maximum cooling capacity is therefore useful when assessing cooling performance, but it should be considered separately from ISEER.
When comparing different cooling capacities, an 1.4 ton AC can be considered alongside other models based on its cooling requirement, energy efficiency and intended room size.
Similarly, an 1.5 ton AC can be evaluated by comparing its ISEER rating, annual energy consumption and cooling capacity with other suitable models.
If the primary criterion is ISEER rating, Optimist's 6.05 ISEER stands above the other current models compared here. Optimist's 1.4-ton 5 Star+ inverter split ACs carry this rating, while the Panasonic and Blue Star models reviewed have lower published ISEER values.
Our 6.05 ISEER rating is supported by a dual-rotary inverter compressor, while Optimist's ACs are also tested for full-rated cooling at 50°C. Smart energy monitoring through the Optimist App provides additional visibility into energy use.
If energy efficiency is a priority, explore Optimist's high-ISEER AC range and compare the model's ISEER, annual energy consumption and cooling specifications before choosing the right AC.
